A joint operation to protect the legality and safety in the workplace led to the reporting of three owners of construction companies operating in the area of BronteThe intervention is part of a broader program of extraordinary controls aimed at preventing and repressing violations in the areas of labor, social security, and social assistance.
The inspection activity was conducted by Carabinieri of Bronte Station, with the support of the Labor Inspectorate of Catania and Palermo Labor Protection GroupFollowing the investigations, three employers were charged, without prejudice to the presumption of innocence until a final sentence is reached: a 46-year-old man residing in Grammichele, a 37-year-old man from Biancavilla, and a 29-year-old woman from Scordia.
The investigations revealed serious irregularities in safety on construction sitesIn particular, the employees were not adequately trained on the risks associated with the tasks performed, in violation of the provisions of the Legislative Decree 81/2008, a key regulation on health and safety in the workplace. The law requires employers to provide specific and constantly updated training, an essential element in preventing even serious accidents.
Further critical issues concerned thefailure of workers to undergo mandatory medical examinations, an essential tool for monitoring the physical fitness of employees in relation to the activities performed. It has also been ascertained that failure to install a compliant construction site electrical system, resulting in high electrical risks, particularly dangerous in the construction sector.
During the checks, the military verified that all three companies were found to be irregular. Of the eight workers found at work, five were employed completely illegally, confirming the persistence of the phenomenon of undeclared work in the construction sector.
For one of the companies a provision for suspension of business activity, because it employed only irregular workers and had violated basic safety regulations. The suspension was accompanied by a administrative fine of 5.500 euros.
Overall, they were raised heavy fines for undeclared work for a total amount of 9.750 €, contested nine fines for safety violations for a total of 12.600 € and recovered INPS social security contributions for about 3.500 €.
The operation confirms the importance of coordinated action between the Carabinieri and specialized labor protection agencies. This ongoing commitment is aimed not only at combating irregular work, but also at ensure adequate safety conditions, to protect workers, legality and fair competition in the construction sector.
